The Two Requirements for a Texas LTC
Every applicant has to complete two things: online classroom instruction and an in-person shooting proficiency test.
Classroom Instruction
- Texas firearm laws
- Use-of-force and self-defense law
- Safe handgun handling and storage
- Non-violent dispute resolution
- Proper interaction with law enforcement while carrying
Shooting Proficiency Test
You’ll schedule this with a certified instructor in Marshall or a nearby location once the classroom portion is done. The course of fire is 50 rounds across three distances:
- 3 yards – 20 rounds
- 7 yards – 20 rounds
- 15 yards – 10 rounds
Pass with a score of 70% or higher. If you don’t clear it right away, Texas allows up to three attempts at both the written and range exams within a 12-month period.
Eligibility Requirements
- Be 18 years of age or older
- Have no felony convictions
- Have no Class A or Class B misdemeanor convictions within the past five years
- Not be subject to a protective or restraining order
- Have no pending criminal charges
- Not be a chemically dependent person
- Be eligible under state and federal law to possess a handgun
- Be of sound mind
- Not have been finally determined delinquent on child support
Exemptions Worth Knowing About
Active-duty military members and veterans with a range score or firearms familiarization training completed within the past 10 years, along with state correctional officers and county jailers who trained on the job, are exempt from the shooting proficiency test and need only complete the online classroom course.

Complete the online coursework and you can download your LTC-104 Certificate of Training immediately — Texas DPS’s official proof-of-training document required for your application. It remains valid for two years, so plan to apply before then.
